Sara Malm is one of the worst people on the list, but far from one of the worst people in the world. I know what you’re thinking - how does that work? Isn’t this list basically a list of the worst people in the world, given that we’re well aware the crimes of Tom Chivers outstrip that of any residents at The Hague? Well, yes, it is. But we gotta keep things fresh - can’t have a thousand entries all of the same thing, and terrible though Sara Malm is, she’s no worse than literally every other person taking an NCTJ course in Britain right now.
It’s a source of continued amazement that getting on in journalism is so difficult, considering what a horrible career choice it is. An industry that’s dying a slow and painful death, the certainty you’ll have to work for free, the long hours, the low pay… I just don’t understand it. Well, I didn’t, until I met Sara Malm.
If you know her, then you’ll probably do so as a result of a piece to which I will not link, regarding striking workers as juvenile man-children, a sentiment which understandably pissed off a lot of people, coming as it did from a writer whose every keystroke screamed privilege. And also because it was in the Independent, and some people are still naive enough to think that editors have any consideration at all that a piece will make sense anymore. But that was just the tip of the iceberg.
Anyone who gazed deeper into the soul of Malm will have seen horrible things, terrible things, yet a curious Pandora’s Box which will make sense of the world and the British media. Gentle reader, I encourage you to consider whether you really want to know this information. You will come out of it understanding Grace Dent, but the price may be too high. If you don’t feel like you can handle it, please back out now.
Right. She fucking loves Piers Morgan. That’s it. Now you may be thinking I’ve overhyped this, but just let it sink in - like, literally thinks he’s a great man, god-worships him - and realise the sort of person that does that. She wants to emulate him in every possible way, And she’s actually getting off her arse and going about that.
To discover Malm’s career is at least a month’s worth of screaming HOW THE FUCK ARE PEOPLE GETTING PAID FOR THIS SHIT! IN THIS DAY AND AGE! over and over again. From the ‘Scandilous Life’ (she’s part Swedish) column, the praise of Piers Morgan, and then the egotism. She’s not the former editor of her uni magazine, she’s the former ‘CEO.’ Showing a “haha! remember when that guy told me to go and work at the Daily Mail! As if that was an insult! Now I am!”-level lack of awareness. It’s all here.
As I say though, it’s just representative of NCTJ students, so whaddayagonnado? Particularly when there’s an active effort to produce people like this. During the storm over the trade union piece she wrote, one of her former tutors at Kent - supposedly one of the best places to study journalism in the country - waded in defending her on the basis that “It got people talking” and “it provoked debate.” When you lament over the next hit-trolling piece online, remember his words: “If you want insight, read a book.”
