Yeah, we’re getting into the good stuff now. As you can tell from the decrease in frequency, we’re also getting into the ones that necessitate real research, going back through the archives to dig up the multitude of atrocities past committed by our targets. In theory, at least. In reality, I reckon I can do this one off the top of my head.
You may notice that Louise Mensch hasn’t been so active on Twitter lately. That’s because she threw her toys out of the pram and made her own Twitter, Menshn. Initially only available in the US, it was named in order to maximise the considerable brand power that a Tory backbencher has over in the states.
Now, if this blog was purely about political types, we wouldn’t be short for numbers and it’d probably be easier to write and harder to order, and the top 100 would probably just be the top 100 posters on Menshn. I wanted to get some sample tweets off there, but the first one I saw was someone complaining that if John Terry got done for racism, then Ashley Cole should’ve too for saying he hates England. That’s your on-topic debate, but more importantly, that’s the sort of people that are choosing to hang out there.
I said I wasn’t going to do any research, so off the top of my head:
She inadvertently launched the ridiculous #genuinetriumphfordavidcameron joke, simultaneously managing to come across as thicker than the liberal-left idiots that comprise most of the Twitterati and starting one of the most tedious trends in Twitter history. She used the fact that Julian Assange raped someone to push her credentials as a feminist while holding up Margaret Thatcher as a role model and finding no problem at all with a government whose policies could lead to the closure of every women’s shelter in the UK. She said John Terry wasn’t guilty of racial abuse. She wrote a tl;dr article in the Telegraph attacking Limmy for wanting Thatcher to die, while MP of a town that lost half its jobs when Thatcher closed its steelworks and is comprised mostly of Scottish immigrants. She wanted Twitter closed down because people were rioting in London. She started the commentariat’s War On People Who Criticise Me which means you can now get arrested for, idk, calling John Rentoul a fanny. She attacked the residents of her own constituency for being self-deprecating about their own town they’ve lived in all their lives when she was spending about two days a month there. She claimed you can’t profess to support an alternative economic system if you Buy Things. She inspired a fuckload of commentariat morons to write “Ah, we’ll miss her now she’s gone!” thinkpieces, both providing an excruciating ‘through the looking-glass’ moment as well as revealing how naive they really are. She lost an argument to Edwina Currie. Twice.
Look, I hate Louise Mensch, as every right-thinking person should, but it’s not just who she is. Priveleged idiots get thrust into positions of power all the time. It’s the fact people have taken to her, in some kinda hideous female-Boris-Johnson routine. They say we get the leaders we deserve, but I’m not a New Statesman columnist, and she still ended up being my MP. Also, at least she doesn’t retweet Graham Linehan.
